Industrial Hygiene: The Science Behind Safety
- In 2022, the U.S. recorded 5,486 fatal work injuries, with the construction industry leading in workplace deaths and transportation and warehousing topping injury and illness rates.
- The top three causes of work-related injuries/illnesses in 2021-22 were exposure to harmful substances/environments, overexertion & bodily reaction, and slips, trips & falls, accounting for over 75% of nonfatal incidents.
- Employers can enhance worker safety by implementing industrial hygiene programs, which aim to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace environmental factors that may pose health risks.
- Industrial hygiene involves workplace analysis, hazard identification, implementing controls (engineering, work practice, administrative), and ensuring proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to mitigate worker exposure to hazards, as mandated by OSHA standards.
