OSHA proposed heat rule ready for publication
- Draft Release and Comment Period: OSHA has released a draft of its proposed rule on heat illness prevention, to be published in the Federal Register, initiating a comment period.
- Heat Illness Prevention Plan: If finalized, the rule requires employers with 10 or more employees to create a written heat illness prevention plan when the heat index reaches 80°F or the wet bulb globe temperature meets NIOSH’s Alert Limit.
- Employer Requirements: The plan includes monitoring heat stress, identifying hazards, providing water and rest areas, indoor controls, acclimatization, hazard alerts, and maintaining protective equipment.
- High Heat Trigger Measures: Additional measures for heat index at 90°F include 15-minute rest breaks every two hours, a buddy system, supervisor observation, two-way communication for lone workers, and warning signs for indoor areas exceeding 120°F.
