On July 13, 2023, OSHA introduced a three-year National Emphasis Program targeting workplace hazards in warehouses, distribution centers, and high-risk retail establishments. The program responds to the significant growth in these sectors over the past decade, while injury and illness rates have outpaced the overall private industry rates. OSHA will conduct thorough safety inspections in these locations, emphasizing hazards related to vehicle operations, material handling, walking and working surfaces, exit routes, and fire safety. This program covers a range of industries, including postal services, couriers, general warehousing, supermarkets, and more. Additionally, OSHA will scrutinize heat and ergonomic hazards. While California already has regulations for outdoor heat prevention, a recently proposed regulation may require indoor heat illness prevention in warehouses and similar workplaces.
