Adoption of New Standard: On June 20, 2024, Cal/OSHA adopted a new Heat Illness Prevention standard for indoor workplaces, after a previous attempt failed on procedural grounds.
Covered Employers: The standard applies to indoor areas where temperatures reach 82°F or higher, excluding telework locations outside employer control and incidental exposures under 15 minutes per hour. Prisons and certain detention facilities are exempt.
Employer Obligations: Employers must provide drinking water, cool-down areas, assess temperatures and heat indices, maintain accurate records, implement control measures, and develop emergency procedures and training.
Effective Date: The standard may take effect in early August 2024 if expedited by the OAL; otherwise, it will become effective on October 1, 2024. For questions, contact a Jackson Lewis attorney.
