Adoption and Coverage: On June 20, 2024, Cal/OSHA adopted a new Heat Illness Prevention standard for indoor workplaces where temperatures reach 82°F or higher. It excludes teleworkers, prisons, detention facilities, and incidental heat exposures under specific conditions.
Additional Requirements: Extra measures are required when temperatures reach or exceed 87°F.
Employer Obligations: Employers must provide drinking water, access to cool-down areas, assess and record temperature and heat index, implement control measures, and develop emergency procedures and training.
Effective Date: The standard may take effect in early August 2024 if expedited by the Office of Administrative Law (OAL); otherwise, it will be effective on October 1, 2024.
