Cal/OSHA’s New Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Requirement: What Retailers Need to Know
Effective July 1, 2024, California’s new workplace violence prevention safety law mandates nearly all employers, including retail, to adopt a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP), train employees on workplace violence, and log safety incidents.
Codified as Senate Bill 553 in California Labor Code section 6401.9, the law broadly applies with exceptions for remote employees, small non-public workplaces, certain healthcare facilities, and law enforcement.
Employers must maintain a WVPP at all facilities, customized to specific hazards, involve employees in its development, record violent incidents, review plans annually, and provide effective training.
The WVPP must be accessible to employees, and employers cannot retaliate against employees seeking emergency assistance during violent incidents.
