Cal/OSHA’s New Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Requirement: What Retailers Need to Know
- Effective July 1, 2024, California’s new workplace violence prevention safety law mandates nearly all employers, including retail, to adopt a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP), train employees on workplace violence, and log safety incidents.
- Codified as Senate Bill 553 in California Labor Code section 6401.9, the law broadly applies with exceptions for remote employees, small non-public workplaces, certain healthcare facilities, and law enforcement.
- Employers must maintain a WVPP at all facilities, customized to specific hazards, involve employees in its development, record violent incidents, review plans annually, and provide effective training.
- The WVPP must be accessible to employees, and employers cannot retaliate against employees seeking emergency assistance during violent incidents.
