California Employers on Deadline: Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Required by July 1
- Compliance Deadline: California employers must have a workplace violence prevention plan (WVPP) in place by July 1, 2024, and ensure completion and training by that date.
- Scope of the Law: The new mandate applies to nearly all employers in California with one or more employees, excluding certain sectors like health care facilities already covered by Cal/OSHA’s standards and law enforcement agencies.
- Requirements: Employers must incorporate specific protocols and procedures into the WVPP, conduct a workplace violence hazard assessment, maintain a log of violent incidents for at least five years, and provide training to employees on workplace violence and the WVPP annually.
- Enforcement and Penalties: Failure to comply may result in citations by Cal/OSHA, leading to civil penalties and potential misdemeanors. Employers need to take immediate action to meet the compliance deadline and avoid penalties.
