OSHA Releases Proposed Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Standard
- Release of Proposed Standard: On July 2, 2024, OSHA released its proposed Heat Injury and Illness Prevention standard, expected to be finalized later this year.
- Employer Requirements: Employers must create a heat injury prevention plan, identify heat hazards, establish emergency procedures, train employees, and maintain records. Additional measures are required when the heat index hits 80°F, and more at 90°F.
- Comparisons with Cal/OSHA: The federal standard is similar to Cal/OSHA’s heat illness rules but has different temperature triggers and stricter requirements for California.
- Public Comment Period: After publication in the Federal Register, stakeholders have 120 days to comment. The standard will take effect in states without an OSHA State Plan, while states with approved plans must adopt the federal rule or create equivalent standards.
