As temperatures rise during the summer – and throughout the year – Safety+Health looks at ongoing federal and state efforts to keep workers safe. The complexity of OSHA’s proposed rule on protecting workers from extreme heat exposure in indoor and outdoor settings requires additional time and patience. Calls for quick action have been made, but the unique nature of the regulation necessitates careful consideration. The article discusses the state-level efforts to protect workers from heat-related illnesses are also discussed. OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on heat-related inspections and employer responsibilities in preventing heat illness are also highlighted.
